“Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
Matthew 22:37-39
In Matthew 22:39, Jesus commands us to “love your neighbor as yourself,” calling us to extend kindness, generosity, and welcome to others. As a Fourth Fellow, I have been deeply blessed to experience this love firsthand through the compassion and hospitality of those who have embraced me in Christ. I have encountered a welcome that reflects God’s love in action, and have been reminded of the beauty of belonging and the transformative power of being seen, known, and loved by Christ.
When I arrived at my host family’s home five months ago, I was immediately met with an extraordinary gift—their decision to share their space, time, and lives with me. I was nervous entering into a place I was unfamiliar with for the next nine months, but their hospitality created a sense of stability and warmth that has made my time with them feel like home. They have welcomed me not just as a guest but as part of their family, offering a safe place where I can grow and thrive. From our shared Tuesday night meals, to the meaningful conversations they share that offer wisdom and encouragement, their generous hospitality has been a tangible reflection of Christ’s love.
The Fourth Presbyterian community has also extended a profound and hospitable welcome to the fellows. I have felt the embrace of the church in various ways – from serving on the youth retreats, attending Sunday morning scripture class, sharing Fourth night dinners together, and having intentional conversations. Through this, I have seen genuine care that goes far beyond formal obligations. The church has made it clear that we are not just visitors but valued members of the Fourth family.
I am so grateful for the love I have been shown as a fellow. This hospitality has not only strengthened my faith but also deepened my understanding of what it means to live out God’s command to love one another. The Fourth community has been so generous to me, and as I continue my journey, I carry with me the profound lessons I’ve learned from those who have so graciously embraced me, living out Christ’s call to love our neighbors as ourselves.
